Helicopter or fixed wing aircraft – a stable platform for aerial photography?

There are many ways to elevate a camera to achieve the required angle and content in an image. Photographers undertaking Commercial Aerial Photography have many choices of platforms on which to elevate themselves but the two main options are either a fixed wing aircraft such as a Cessna or a rotary aircraft such as a Robinson Helicopter.

Fixed wing aircraft

Advantages

  • More economical –lower running costs.
  • Less vibration.
  • Good endurance.
  • Plenty of space for equipment.
  • Disadvantages

  • Wing tip or strut can get in the way.
  • Continuously moving.
  • Can be difficult to position.
  • Rotary Aircraft

    Advantages

  • Can hover – remain stationary in the air.
  • Can operate very low to the ground.
  • Greater maneuverability on the spot.
  • Easy to get into the right position for the required shot.
  • Disadvantages

  • High cost per hour.
  • Smaller lower cost helicopters have greater vibration.
  • Lower cost helicopters such as the R22 have very little room for equipment.
  • It is clear that both Rotary and Fixed wing aircraft have their advantages and disadvantages and although small rotary aircraft can have comparable running costs they also have reduced cruised speed. Therefore it would take longer to get from site to site which is where economies of scale can be obtained. Therefore if the company has a planned route where there are many sites far apart a more economically cruising aircraft such as a Cessna 172 may be the best option. This type of planning is often the case where Oblique Aerial Photography is required for the commercial property market and large companies will have many sites far apart.

Survey Photography is often undertaken using fixed wing aircraft with a vertical camera. This is because most surveys are required along a fixed route such as a pipe line or a road network and require vertical photography through the bottom of the fuselage of the aircraft.

Event Aerial Photography often benefits from using a rotary aircraft as the ability to remain relatively stationary over the ground allows continuous coverage of one spot. This also allows the aircraft to land nearby in a temporary airfield to refuel before continuing coverage.

Helicopters for Sale: Tips for Making a Great Buy

Information about where to find helicopter toys and supplies.

Before you decide to become a chopper shopper, you may need to decide one question: why in the world would anybody want to buy a helicopter?  Some of the most common reasons include sport and recreation (such as the ability to travel to and from a remote area) and professional use (like military or “search and rescue” operations).  Whether you’re a police chief interested in expanding the force’s arsenal or a business man who needs to do a lot of on-the-fly traveling, you may have decided that a helicopter is right for you.  So what’s next, you ask?  Assuming you’re a newcomer, let’s look at the basics:

There are a surprising number of websites that are manufacturers helicopters of all kinds.  There are three main types of choppers: the single-rotor, coaxial-rotor, and the tandem-rotor.  The single-rotor is the most frequent.  Cost will vary based on model, age, and size.  You can buy them small enough to fit only two people or big enough to fit multiple vehicles inside.  Rest assured, they don’t come cheap.  New copters will run you anywhere from $200,000 to $400,000.  A used one may cost you considerably less (in the tens of thousands instead of the hundreds).  There is also the option of leasing from a company instead of buying one outright.  Popular models include the Blackhawk, the Scorpion, the Robinson, and the Cessna.  Don’t forget to purchase additional supplies such as a parachute, manual compass, first aid kit, and other logical aviation-related supply before going up in the air.

One final tip: don’t expect to learn to fly in one day.  A helicopter is a very complicated machine and it requires weeks or usually months of training to be able to handle one competently.  Unlike driving or other transportation on the ground, a pilot must think in three dimensions.  While you’re not likely to fly into a lot of traffic, falling from the sky at 20,000 feet is much more likely to be fatal than crashing in a vehicle already on the ground.  Call on the services of a respectable flight school who has plenty of experience and pay close attention to all the safety precautions.  After all, anything worth doing is worth doing right!

Pros and Cons of Electric RC helicopter

Before you buy an electric rc helicopter, there are things you need to know.

Here are the pros and cons of electric rc helicopter

    Pros

Electric RC helicopter is one of the more favorable kinds of rc helicopters out there in the market for several reasons:

    · It is easy to fly

If you are beginning to take interest on rc helicopters, then the best way to a good start is to buy an electric rc helicopter. It is easy to fly since it only requires batteries for power. You don’t have to deal with engines and engine malfunction. You also don’t have to buy gas to make it fly. With electric rc helicopters, you don’t have to have knowledge about how engines work. You don’t need to tinker complicated moving parts since there is none. All you need to know is where the controls and your rc is flying in no time.

    · It is quiet

Other rc helicopters, especially the gas powered, create a lot of noise. And this is often times annoying not only to you but also on your neighbor who wants to get some quiet moment alone. Thus, you cannot fly them around your neighborhood. The good thing about electric rc helicopter is that it creates no noise at all. Without an engine, your rc will fly silently anywhere you want it to fly without disturbing the peace.

    · It is safe

Batteries are generally safe to use. This also goes with electric rc helicopter. All you have to do is to recharge it when it is empty and it will be off again in the air. You don’t have to deal with flammables and you don’t have to deal with engine at all.

    Cons

Just like any other products, electric rc helicopter has its drawbacks. Here are those:

    · The experience is less exciting

Full-size helicopters have engines and no helicopter is powered by electric current. So you cannot get a helicopter-like experience if wit electric rc helicopter. The engine noise adds up to the experience. Without it, it may be boring.

    · Activity is limited

With electric rc helicopter, all you have to do is charge, fly, re-charge, fly, re-charge again, and fly again. Until you get to hate it. Like what was said earlier, you are limited to flying. Aside to that, no more.

Other RC like gas rc helicopter is more than flying, you get to tinker with the engine and in the process, get more excited every time you fly.
