Guide to shopping for RC helicopters

by Guy

If you are going to get into Helicopters or even planes, there is one bit of advice I can pass. Start small and inexpensive. I had started with the little Micro Helicopter that is sold by many manufactures that is controlled with Infrared. It was durable and crashable to a point and still flyies. The controls are easy enough and will get you used to have a lot to keep track of. Yes it is a battery copter and needs about a 1/2 hour to fly.

Now I have upgraded to a channel (two sticks that move 4 directios each) and they have two sets of main rotor blade that turn in opposite directions. The helicopter itself is much larger (about a foot and half long) and runs on a Battery. It is a lot more to manage price wise considering fixing up but not as bad as the gas ones. The advatage to having the other is that it kinds train (low risk mind you) me for this one. I am flying this one much better than if I had not had the other one. My dad and bother got the larger one and have has much more difficulty and cost trying to learn with theirs than I have (even taking into account the cost of the first Helicopter which still works and has never broken over many crashes).

The Counter rotaing props are more stable and will recover (restablize)for you to make an easier flight compared to one with just a main rotor and a tail rotor. You will be able to control it better and get the hang of it. I would also get into a forum on-line to read about which ones the people are using and what they think of them. Look for easy of flight, durability, and ease of fixing. Anything else is too much of a hassle.

I am thinking that gas powered would be to expensive as a "trainer" until you have really thought about how much you like the activity. Starting off with the most difficult may put you off of the whole thing right away before you have a chance to like it.

    RC Helicopter Blade Balancing

RC helicopter blade balancing is considered by some to be an art all by itself and some people never really master it. Sure, there RC helicopter rotor balancing tools that you buy, but why spend that money if you don't need to? Or what if you need to balance your rotor blades and don't have that tool nearby? Is it possible to balance your rotor blades without a balancing tool?

    Yes, it is!

This article will lay out a free and very effective way for you to be able to dynamically and statically balance your rotor blades. All you'll need to do is spend a little time and energy to do it right.

Some people have wondered why they're even balancing the rotor blades to begin with and the answer is very simple: to get rid of unwanted vibrations in the RC helicopter. It's kind of like driving a car with one wheel out of balance - it just throws the whole ride off. With RC helicopters, instead of throwing the flight off, it can seriously affect its flight performance and the vibrations that ensue can even tear your RC helicopter apart!

The core idea with rotor balancing is to get rid of as much of the unwanted vibration as possible. You may not be able to get rid of them all, so don't be upset if there is a little vibration leftover.

The method that we're going to use is effective and doesn't take long at all, but it's important that you do it with caution and accuracy. When it's all done, you'll have blades that are statically and dynamically balanced.

This is what you'll need - your main rotor blades, a round shaft (market, main shaft ect.) of some kind, a sharp pencil, electrical or balancing tape, some thread, and a nut and bolt.

How To Balance Your Blades Dynamically

    1. First, we want to determine that out center of gravity is the same for each blade. Here's how we do it:

    2. Place your round shaft on a flat surface.

    3. Place one rotor blade at the top edge of the round shaft, balancing it with your fingers Slide the blade back and forth until you find its balancing spot (also know as the center of gravity).

    4. Now mark that spot with a pencil and don't move the blade as you mark it.

    5. Do this with the second blade as well.

    6. Now, match up the blades by laying them on top of each other.

    7. Move the top blade enough to see where the balancing point is for it and compare the two points.

    8. If they're more than 1mm apart, you need to change the balancing point on the blade that has it's center of gravity closest to the blade tip, by transferring the balancing point closer to the bolt hole. You can do this by adding small strips of tape near the bolt hole until the center of gravity points match on both blades

    9. Repeat this until you have applied enough tape to make the necessary correction to match the center of gravity (balancing point) of both blades and you're done!

How To Balance Your Blades Statically

This type of balance matches the weight of each blade to the other and here's how we do it:

    1. Take a nut and bolt and attach the blades together and set them symmetrically apart like they would be in flight.

    2. Hang the rotor blades from your thread. You can do this with a wing nut or simply put the thread between the top blade and the nut before you tighten them together. Just make sure that the thread is lined up with the center of the blades or you've just wasted your time. You can also center the ends of the bold between two objects of equal height (like a 2 by 4) to balance them.

    3. Pick up the blades by the thread and let them hang naturally. Look at them at eye-level to see if they're level or if one rotor blade is lower than the other. If they're level, then job well done! If they're not level, then we need to fix it by adding small strips of tape to the blade that is higher (it means it's lighter).

The key is to add the strips near the balancing point, or center of gravity, so that you don't undo all the work you've already done. Just add the tape until they're both level and when they're level, you'll know that they're balanced! You're now an official RC helicopter blade balancing guru! Well done!

Helicopter or fixed wing aircraft – a stable platform for aerial photography?

There are many ways to elevate a camera to achieve the required angle and content in an image. Photographers undertaking Commercial Aerial Photography have many choices of platforms on which to elevate themselves but the two main options are either a fixed wing aircraft such as a Cessna or a rotary aircraft such as a Robinson Helicopter.

    Fixed wing aircraft

    Advantages

  • More economical –lower running costs.
  • Less vibration.
  • Good endurance.
  • Plenty of space for equipment.
  • Disadvantages

  • Wing tip or strut can get in the way.
  • Continuously moving.
  • Can be difficult to position.
  • Rotary Aircraft

    Advantages

  • Can hover – remain stationary in the air.
  • Can operate very low to the ground.
  • Greater maneuverability on the spot.
  • Easy to get into the right position for the required shot.
  • Disadvantages

  • High cost per hour.
  • Smaller lower cost helicopters have greater vibration.
  • Lower cost helicopters such as the R22 have very little room for equipment.
  • It is clear that both Rotary and Fixed wing aircraft have their advantages and disadvantages and although small rotary aircraft can have comparable running costs they also have reduced cruised speed. Therefore it would take longer to get from site to site which is where economies of scale can be obtained. Therefore if the company has a planned route where there are many sites far apart a more economically cruising aircraft such as a Cessna 172 may be the best option. This type of planning is often the case where Oblique Aerial Photography is required for the commercial property market and large companies will have many sites far apart.

Survey Photography is often undertaken using fixed wing aircraft with a vertical camera. This is because most surveys are required along a fixed route such as a pipe line or a road network and require vertical photography through the bottom of the fuselage of the aircraft.

Event Aerial Photography often benefits from using a rotary aircraft as the ability to remain relatively stationary over the ground allows continuous coverage of one spot. This also allows the aircraft to land nearby in a temporary airfield to refuel before continuing coverage.

Helicopters for Sale: Tips for Making a Great Buy

Information about where to find helicopter toys and supplies.

Before you decide to become a chopper shopper, you may need to decide one question: why in the world would anybody want to buy a helicopter?  Some of the most common reasons include sport and recreation (such as the ability to travel to and from a remote area) and professional use (like military or “search and rescue” operations).  Whether you’re a police chief interested in expanding the force’s arsenal or a business man who needs to do a lot of on-the-fly traveling, you may have decided that a helicopter is right for you.  So what’s next, you ask?  Assuming you’re a newcomer, let’s look at the basics:

There are a surprising number of websites that are manufacturers helicopters of all kinds.  There are three main types of choppers: the single-rotor, coaxial-rotor, and the tandem-rotor.  The single-rotor is the most frequent.  Cost will vary based on model, age, and size.  You can buy them small enough to fit only two people or big enough to fit multiple vehicles inside.  Rest assured, they don’t come cheap.  New copters will run you anywhere from $200,000 to $400,000.  A used one may cost you considerably less (in the tens of thousands instead of the hundreds).  There is also the option of leasing from a company instead of buying one outright.  Popular models include the Blackhawk, the Scorpion, the Robinson, and the Cessna.  Don’t forget to purchase additional supplies such as a parachute, manual compass, first aid kit, and other logical aviation-related supply before going up in the air.

One final tip: don’t expect to learn to fly in one day.  A helicopter is a very complicated machine and it requires weeks or usually months of training to be able to handle one competently.  Unlike driving or other transportation on the ground, a pilot must think in three dimensions.  While you’re not likely to fly into a lot of traffic, falling from the sky at 20,000 feet is much more likely to be fatal than crashing in a vehicle already on the ground.  Call on the services of a respectable flight school who has plenty of experience and pay close attention to all the safety precautions.  After all, anything worth doing is worth doing right!

Pros and Cons of Electric RC helicopter

Before you buy an electric rc helicopter, there are things you need to know.

Here are the pros and cons of electric rc helicopter

    Pros

Electric RC helicopter is one of the more favorable kinds of rc helicopters out there in the market for several reasons:

    · It is easy to fly

If you are beginning to take interest on rc helicopters, then the best way to a good start is to buy an electric rc helicopter. It is easy to fly since it only requires batteries for power. You don’t have to deal with engines and engine malfunction. You also don’t have to buy gas to make it fly. With electric rc helicopters, you don’t have to have knowledge about how engines work. You don’t need to tinker complicated moving parts since there is none. All you need to know is where the controls and your rc is flying in no time.

    · It is quiet

Other rc helicopters, especially the gas powered, create a lot of noise. And this is often times annoying not only to you but also on your neighbor who wants to get some quiet moment alone. Thus, you cannot fly them around your neighborhood. The good thing about electric rc helicopter is that it creates no noise at all. Without an engine, your rc will fly silently anywhere you want it to fly without disturbing the peace.

    · It is safe

Batteries are generally safe to use. This also goes with electric rc helicopter. All you have to do is to recharge it when it is empty and it will be off again in the air. You don’t have to deal with flammables and you don’t have to deal with engine at all.

    Cons

Just like any other products, electric rc helicopter has its drawbacks. Here are those:

    · The experience is less exciting

Full-size helicopters have engines and no helicopter is powered by electric current. So you cannot get a helicopter-like experience if wit electric rc helicopter. The engine noise adds up to the experience. Without it, it may be boring.

    · Activity is limited

With electric rc helicopter, all you have to do is charge, fly, re-charge, fly, re-charge again, and fly again. Until you get to hate it. Like what was said earlier, you are limited to flying. Aside to that, no more.

Other RC like gas rc helicopter is more than flying, you get to tinker with the engine and in the process, get more excited every time you fly.
